Sesame Street, Tom and Jerry movies set for 2021 release
Warner Bros. Pictures has announced the official release dates for two family films, with the new Sesame Street movie set to arrive on January 15, 2021 and the live-action/CG hybrid Tom and Jerry movie debuting on April 16, 2021.Both films are the first set to open on their respective dates.
Anne Hathaway is set to star in the big screen adaptation of Sesame Street which has Portlandia director and co-creator Jonathan Krisel will step behind the camera for the musical which will also star Big Bird, Bert, Ernie, Grover, Oscar the Grouch, Cookie Monster, and Elmo.
The Sesame Street movie is being produced by Oscar nominee Shawn Levy (Arrival) alongside Michael Aguilar (Kidding). Krisel will be directing from a script penned by Chris Galletta, who wrote the most recent draft. Mike Rosolio wrote the first draft of the script. Sesame Workshop holds the right to the series and will be involved with project development.
Tim Story (Fantastic Four, and 2019’s Shaft reboot) will direct the Tom and Jerry film. The popular cat and mouse feature will be the first live-action hybrid to shoot in 2019 (the second is Space Jam), and will utilize computer animation for the titular duo in a live action setting, ala 2004’s Garfield.Unlike the 1992 feature Tom and Jerry: The Movie, the animals will stay silent and rely on physical comedy to draw laughs.
