As Lady Mary’s baby bump has yet to be seen on set or in movie stills, it suggests the movie could take off from the very moment the series wrapped up.

Although the details of the plot have been kept under lock and key, the stars have descended on the original Downton Abbey — Highclere Castle in Hampshire to film.

The show’s executive producer Gareth Neame joked to Entertainment Weekly: ‘She can’t be in it – she’s in every other film in the world at the moment!’
While creator Julian Fellowes admitted that the actress, 29, was the show’s ‘greatest success story’ now that she’s carved such a prominent Hollywood career.
Of her absence, he explained: ‘Lily is now a big star, and it would’ve been incredibly difficult for her to find time in her schedule to come and play essentially a supporting role in Downton when her career was in a different place when she was with us.’

She then added: ‘My character Rose moved off to New York, so it would be farfetched to bring her back.
‘I would have loved to have come back for a scene, but for a movie it can’t be like a Christmas special and it needs to be a focused storyline. There was no space for Rose.’
Fans of the show will remember Lily bowed out of the period drama in 2015 after Lady Rose moved to New York with her husband Atticus (Matt Barber).
