Bryan Adams turned into a global star with his 1984 album Reckless, which included tracks ‘Run to You’ and ‘Summer of ’69’.

And on Tuesday, the Canadian singer encountered an awkward exchange on New Zealand TV when quizzed about the origins of his hit ‘Summer of 69’.

Appearing on Seven Sharp, the musician, 59, looked visibly uncomfortable as host Jeremy Wells asked: ‘Great lyrics, great song, but I was just having a look and you were nine?’

Placing his water glass down on the table, Adam confessed: ‘It’s not about the year… It’s a metaphor. I never said 1969.’

Shocked by the songwriter’s admission, Jeremy came to a realisation: ‘Oh, it’s a metaphor for THAT?’

Jeremy’s co-host Hilary Barry instinctively placed her hand over her mouth as she took in a sharp breath on camera.

Cheekily grinning, Adam said after a short silence: ‘It’s a metaphor for a great summer.’

Jeremy then interjected ‘Of love?’, to which Adam agreed: ‘Summer of love. Exactly! Thank you very much.’

The awkward chat also saw the co-hosts shut down by the singer multiple times when asked about false rumours about his career and musical inspiration.
